# Varsity Jacket

Michael has to order his varsity school jacket for the upcoming awards ceremony.

The company that the school has chosen offers the jacket for $220 plus$2 per letter for the name patch stitched onto the back of the jacket. The company has a special offer for early bird orders so that the cost of the jacket is $190, and the cost of each letter is$2.50.

Reflection Questions

• How can we compare the different ordering options for the jacket?
• What would the functions look like that represent each option?
• How would the graphs of the two functions compare?

In the next section, we will look at transformations of linear equations to help us answer that question.

# Transformations of Linear Equations

Let’s look at some transformations of linear equations using a virtual manipulative.

Reflection Questions

Notice that the graph is shown with the linear parent function f(x) = x. To the right is the menu that will allow you to navigate through the five different transformations.

• The first activity is Adding a Constant.
• The second activity is Adding a Constant to the Input of a Function.
• The third activity is Adding a Constant to a Function or its Input.
• The fourth activity is Multiplying by a Constant.
• The fifth activity is Multiplying by a Negative Constant.
