Reflection Activity—The Role of Math in Everyday Life

Connecting Math to Real-World Applications

Now that you’ve had an opportunity to reflect on mathematics in your and your students’ everyday lives, watch the following video, from The National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, to learn more about real-world math applications.
As you watch, consider the following questions:

  • Is there a disconnect between traditional or school math and the math we use every day?
  • How are you currently teaching math to your students?
  • How can you explicitly connect the school math to the real-world application being taught in your CTE curriculum?

"null"

The host of this video uses the term "maths" rather than "math." Both are equally acceptable abbreviations of mathematics. The only difference is that math is preferred in the U.S. and Canada, and maths is preferred in the U.K., Australia, and most other English-speaking areas of the world.
