Decoding Word Problems
This lesson focuses on multi-step word problems involving division along with addition or subtraction. The students chunk word problems into each individual step and learn how to choose a familiar strategy.
Problem-Solving Pet Store
Using a pet store theme, students will work in groups to solve real-world problems to grasp the concept of multi-step multiplication and division word problems.
Unlocking Strategies to Multiply and Divide within 100
Students will work in cooperative groups to confidently solve one and two-step multiplication and division problems up to 100 using arrays, strip diagrams, and equations.
Multiplication at the Market
Students will solve one-step multiplication problems using concrete objects, pictorial models, arrays, and equal groups.
Solving One- and Two-Step Addition and Subtraction Problems
Students will use strategies to break down steps in a word problem, allowing for an understanding of the vocabulary and processes necessary, to apply correct math operations, maintain correct place value, and analyze solution feasibility.
Building Stamina During Stations
Students will participate in differentiated stations based on counting coins, comparing values, and purchasing items within various wants and needs. Students will self-assess their stamina development throughout the lesson.
Understanding Mathematical Word Problems
The student is expected to represent word problems involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers up to 20 using concrete and pictorial models and number sentences.
Graphs and More Graphs Oh My!
Students will gather data based on a game and create the four types of graphs (pictograph, frequency table, bar graph, and dot plot).
Students Working
Decomposing Number Exploration
Students will decompose a number up to 20 using manipulatives and graphic organizers.
Teacher Giving Instructions
Amazing Graphs
Students will understand the different representations of graphical data, through reading, listening, and comprehension of a word problem so they can devise a problem solving plan that addresses the entire problem.
Math Problem Solving CAN DRIVE good problem solvers!: 1st grade CAN Drive
Students will help the principal collect cans for a can food drive. The students will be able to solve math word problems using the UPS✓ (UNDERSTAND what the problem is asking, make a PLAN, SOLVE the problem, and then CHECK to see if the answer makes sense) song/strategy, draw to show their work, and write a number sentence to go with their problem.
Using Part-Part-Whole as a Strategy to Solve Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
Students use a part-part-whole mat as a strategy to help them organize information in a word problem.
Equivalent Fractions
Students will identify equivalent fractions by finding corresponding fractions on human number lines.
Comparing in Stations
Students will extend their knowledge of greater than and less than to numbers 80–120. Students will work in stations to deepen their understanding and have multiple experiences with the concept.
