Teaming up with Transitions
Students participate in an activity where they must link cause and effect statements using transition words. The lesson is designed with English learners in mind, and it includes instructional strategies designed to provide comprehensible input, such as visuals and collaborative learning.
Increasing Student Agency with Nonfiction Text
Students compare deep reading with an iceberg. Instruction focuses on teaching students’ close reading and annotation skills and increasing agency as students dive into informational text. Students are empowered through conversations, tech tools, and co-creation of criteria to read deeply.
Combining Sentences
Students will manipulate word and punctuation cards from mentor sentences to compose and decompose compound sentences.
Tackling Transitions
In this lesson, students will learn how to effectively use transition words. These will be used to connect ideas and organize the flow of their writing so it is coherent.
The Characteristics of the Mystery Letter "H"
Students will identify and apply characteristics of an alphabetical letter (mystery letter Hh) through various hands-on activities and cooperative group work.
Character Traits
Students will be able to identify characters, their traits, and the reason for their actions.
Fun with First Drafts
The lesson will support students’ writing a first draft of a personal narrative story by providing opportunities to listen to their previously recorded story, review their (graphic organizer) draft web, and add sticky notes with further details to their webs.
Revising Sentences
Students will revise a simple sentence by copying it on a series of sticky notes and adding new words using glitter pens and star-shaped sticky notes.

Rhyming with Visuals
The teacher will model how to recognize rhyming words by hearing them, seeing them, reading them, and writing them. Then the students will practice hearing, seeing, reading, and writing “at” word family words.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Related to the Unit
This unit connects to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) by fostering a continuance in the area of phonological awareness as begun in previous lessons and introducing the exploration of nursery rhymes, poetry, and lullabies through literature and language play.

My Version of the Three Little Pigs
Students will create their own version of "The Three Little Pigs" using story elements on a Beginning, Middle, End (BME) story map. First, students will draft their story map with detailed pictures in sequential order, and then go back and add their words later. Once their story is completed, students will be able to retell their story to peers and their teacher.

Retelling Facts and Making Inferences
In learning stations, students will work independently and collaboratively to make inferences and retell important facts from multiple expository texts.
Diggin’ for Revisions
This lesson is focused on revising one sentence in isolation. The student and teacher choose a revision focus question before the lesson for the student to use as a guide for revising their sentence. Students provide feedback to their peers on how they could revise their sentence based on the selected focus question. Once feedback is completed, students begin revising their own sentence using toolboxes. At the end, students publish their revised sentence onto the online discussion tool and share out how they revised their sentence.
Rainforest Research Stations - Graffiti Table
The students will learn the First Research Station— Graffiti Table by watching the teacher model ‘thinking aloud,’ by looking at photographs from nonfiction books, then sketching what she is noticing.
What Mystery Family Moved into Kindergarten?
Students will identify words in a specific word family in collaborative groups.
Are Letters Important?
Students will use alphabet cards to create consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words and encode and decode given CVC words.
Teacher doing Introduction
Inference Beyond a Text
Students will make inferences through workstations that allow them to work collaboratively and explore.
When Readers Get in Trouble
In this lesson, students will learn how they can monitor their own reading with meaning, structure, and visual information by reading both independently and with a partner. Students will self-select books on their instructional level and reflect on how they monitored their reading with their partners and the class.
Discovering Patterns in Words
Students will build words using letter tiles and discuss the spelling pattern. Students will build a new challenge word by changing the end sound, vowel sound, or making a blend according to the needs of each group.
Text Features and Creatures
This lesson incorporates the science standard of identifying basic parts of an animal and their basic needs with the kindergarten reading standard of using titles and simple graphics to gain information. The lesson is a gradual release of responsibility in which students gain as much information as possible from photographs of mammals while collaborating with a partner. Students will then compare diagrams of their animals from a previous lesson with the photographs of their animal, noticing what information is gained from each text feature and how they are different.
